Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic, public speaker and Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency which is a website which features video and posts on the representations of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic who has won prizes for her work, is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are depicted in popular culture. In her efforts to dispel the myths of women that have been portrayed in pop culture she also seeks to bring attention to the targeted harassment of women and the other marginalized groups of the Internet space. A graduate in political and social thought from York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaking engagement and has given speech at the TEDxWomen Festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. From an early age she was intrigued with gender issues and feminist thought. While still at school in 2009, she created her Feminist Frequency website. She had a plan to start an internet-based series that examined the gender roles in games however, she was also the subject of an online campaign to harass her. This attack was not enough to deter her. In fact, it made her more committed to being a feminist and a media critic. The award-winning journalist has received numerous accolades in recognition of her many prominent contributions to the field of feminism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media journalist who has received several awards and founded Feminist Frequency which is an educational non-profit that examines how women are represented in popular culture narratives.
