Her role as Lisa McDowell, a romantic comedy film about moving to America (1988) and its sequel Coming 2 America (2021) is among her most well-known roles. Headley was also featured in The Preacher's Wife (1996) as well as Johnson Family Vacation (2004). Headley was a regular on-air character in All My Children, an ABC daytime soap drama. She was the character Detective Mimi Reed from 1991 to 1994. She played the lead role in the Fox drama series 413 Hope St. (1997-1998) where she won an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. Headley played the role of Jennifer Sallison, a villain in the Oprah Winfrey Network primetime soap Opera The Haves and the Have Nots.
